In 1863, a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts authorized five Jesuits of Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus to incorporate as β€œthe Trustees of the Boston College.” Their South End school became the first chartered college to operate in Boston in September 1864, when twenty-two boys – with an average age of fourteen – enrolled and classes began. Mathematician, philosopher and author. Kattsoff earned his bachelors and doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in 1929 and 1934, respectively. He taught at several colleges and universities before coming to Boston College. Kattsoff was active in many organizations and wrote extensively on mathematics. He died in 1979.
